Elf Monitore dokumentieren eine Aktion, für die die Künstlerin paarweise Menschen auswählte, die sich physisch ähneln, und die sie dabei filmte, wie sie bei ihrem Zusammentreffen versuchen, nicht zu lachen. Zu Anfang spannen sie ihre Gesichter an, um ernst zu bleiben. Es ist jedoch nur eine Frage der Zeit, bis einer oder die andere zu lachen anfängt, und kurz darauf beginnt auch das Gegenüber zu lachen. Die Arbeit wurde durch die Beobachtung angeregt, dass Menschen in Gruppensituationen dazu tendieren, einander zu imitieren. Zu der Zeit, als Dell’Angelo ihre Videoaufnahmen machte, war ihr die Theorie der Spiegelneuronen zur Erklärung, warum Menschen einander imitieren und für andere Wesen Empathie empfinden, unbekannt. Ihre Intuition führte sie zur Untersuchung von Phänomenen, mit denen sich die Neurowissenschaft heute sehr intensiv beschäftigt.

Eleven monitors document an action for which the artist selected pairs of physically resembling people and filmed them as they faced one another trying not to laugh. At first they contract their faces to stay serious. But it is only a matter of time until one breaks into laughter and soon after the facing companion starts laughing too. The work was inspired by the observation that people engaged in group-activities tend to imitate each other. At the time she shot the videos, Marta Dell’Angelo was not familiar with the theory of mirror neurons that seeks to explain why people imitate and feel empathy for other beings. She was intuitively drawn to explore the phenomena that very much engage neuroscientists today.
